What is an Urban Forest School?

Located in the garden city of Singapore, with its many parks and green spaces scattered over the island, Roots and Boots reflects the unique approach to outdoor learning that is the Forest School, and adapts it to our urban landscape and society. We believe that a deeper understanding of ourselves as well as the world we live in can be gained through time spent in the natural environment.

Our programmes emphasise the importance of life skills and experiential learning, and are designed with the children’s interests and holistic development in mind. They are complimentary, not separate, to learning in a traditional classroom.

Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.
— Stephen Moss

We strive to create a learning community in which children feel motivated and inspired to find knowledge. We encourage the development of critical-thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills: attributes that will be in demand and inspire lifelong learning no matter what our children’s futures may hold. We celebrate individuality and support children to express their ideas with confidence as they explore the world. We equip them with the ability to succeed through practice, by showing them how to learn from their mistakes and improve. This is a method that they will be able to apply to any frustrating situation for the rest of their lives.
