At Roots and Boots, we guide children through hands-on learning experiences in nature. Our Forest School programs provide an enriching environment where children explore, observe, and connect with the world around them. The children’s curiosity and creativity are continually sparked as they engage with the diverse plants, animals, and natural wonders they encounter during their explorations.
Throughout their time in our programs, children have the opportunity to make exciting discoveries in nature. They may encounter plants like the frangipani with its white petals and yellow center, which they’ve learned to call the “egg flower,” or the kapok tree, whose pods burst open to release cotton-like material. They may also be drawn to the saraca tree, with its striking yellow flowers, or the bottle-like tree, with its spiky, thorn-covered trunk. These experiences encourage children to observe and engage with their surroundings, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the natural world.
At Roots and Boots, we provide a learning environment that encourages children to express themselves in meaningful ways. Whether through storytelling, reenacting their favorite experiences, or sharing their discoveries with their peers, each child is given the opportunity to take charge of their learning. This approach helps build confidence, strengthens communication skills, and fosters a deeper connection to nature. Our goal is to ensure that every child leaves with not just new knowledge, but also a sense of pride and excitement in their own abilities.
In addition to plants, the children also encounter a variety of local animals. They spot changeable lizards hiding in crevices, monitor lizards, and waterhens in the ponds. Using bird booklets, they identify different bird species by shape, color, and call, and even learn to tell male birds from female birds based on their sounds. The children further enhance their learning by creating maps, labeling the creatures they discover, and strengthening their connection to the environment.
